The American bull terrier almost immediately will strike you as a dog of power, passion and undying willingness. This breed has a strong desire to please their owners and this dog has evoked more human emotion - both rational and irrational - than any other breed that exists today. These dogs are by no means people-haters, their natural aggressiveness are typically toward other dogs and not people. The key to owning one of these dogs is early socialization with a firm, confident pack leader and such socialization and training will result in reduced aggressiveness, even toward other dogs.

These dogs are usually not recommended for first time dog owners as they can be stubborn and their size and strength can make them difficult to handle if not trained properly. The American bull terrier is good natured, extremely loyal and is a very affectionate family pet. This dog exudes confidence and courage and is always willing to please its owner, and this loyalty means this dog will be highly protective of not only their owner, but of their owner’s property as well. While these dogs are friendly, they are not recommended for everyone, since not everyone understands how to properly raise and train these dogs.

This breed is known to have a high tolerance for pain, which allows them to easily tolerate rough child play but as with any dog, they should not be left alone with children they are not familiar with. The American bull terrier was originally used as a fighting dog, and this is why these dogs may go for the throat of strange dogs. Training, exercise and a firm leader will produce a tranquil and obedient American Bull Terrier.

Unfortunately, there are people who choose to promote the fighting instinct in the dog which serves to give this breed a bad name. When properly trained and socialized from an early age, the American bull terrier is a very well-behaved dog and an excellent family companion. These dogs will do well in an apartment setting if they are given sufficient exercise in the form of long, brisk walks. These dogs can compete in all manner of organized dog sports from herding to agility and obedience. This breed is truly one of the most versatile dogs on the planet and they are usually used in law enforcement work, search and rescue as well as therapy dogs.
